After a summer visit to a couple of our project sites in PA, our services were requested by our friends at Native Forest Nursery in GA. They loved the idea of converting turf to a sustainable, living landscape. Add in reduced lawn to maintain, and they were completely on board. After a little ...research of native seed mixes for the ecoregion and some prior site prep instructions were carried out, we made the trek and brought our Woods Equipment CSS48 seed drill with us. Excited to see the outcome of this installation next season as well as for the opportunity to take our knowledge of conservation landscape practices to other areas.

It is always a beautiful place to visit to check on the upcoming crops as well.

How did you spend this beautiful 62° day? We conducted maintenance mowing of this once turf turned pollinator meadow to encourage seed dispersal while allowing us to locate and treat any woody invasives that may have made their way in such as Tree of Heaven

It feels like over the past 2 weeks, we've "been everywhere, man": 🎶 we've been to Louisville, Frederick, Union Bridge, Venus, Bellefonte, Port Matilda, State College...

From the freeways to the forested dirt and gravel roads, it's been a busy few weeks checking out / demo-ing the latest and upcoming industry products at the Equip Exposition , instructing Riparian Buffer installation practices for our friends at Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional Certification , nursery visits with Clear Ridge Nursery, Inc. , converting lawns to upland forests, installing native shrubs within temporary right of ways in the forests of Clarion county and wrapping up this week by complimenting some agricultural BMPs with a multifunctional riparian buffer.

Native plants are species that are indigenous to a specific region. Native species promote bio-diversity on your property and require less work and resources to flourish.

A tremendous amount of water applied to lawns and gardens is never absorbed by the plants and put to use. The greatest waste of water is applying too much too often, resulting in runoff.

• A 1,000 square foot lawn requires 10,000 gallons of water per summer to maintain a “green” look.

Most invasive plants are “exotics.” That is, they have been brought here from another ecosystem, frequently from another continent. That often means that they arrived here with few or no natural enemies to control them and hold down their numbers.

Water, food, shelter (including nesting spots), and space to live out their lives in a fairly undisturbed way are the basic things all animals need. The more of these elements we can provide in our suburban and urban landscapes, the better off wildlife will be. If we provide a diversity of habitats which include native plants, and few if any pesticides, more of the locally-evolved species will be able to coexist with us.

Reduce runoff and soil erosion and stabilize slopes by planting native trees, shrubs, and perennial ground covers in swales and on terraces, in addition to level and raised areas Reducing stormwater runoff, erosion, flooding, and sediment buildup is a major benefit of practicing conservation landscaping techniques in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
